Although recent studies (NCIS) have shown that only a small percentage of the United States population can be classified as compulsive gamblers, the Louisiana gaming industry has, since its inception, taken the lead in addressing this issue.

The Casino Association of Louisiana (CAL) provides substantial financial support on an annual basis to the Louisiana Association on Compulsive Gambling (LACG) with contributions to date totaling over half a million dollars in addition to the contributions provided by the CAL members independently. The Association on Compulsive Gambling has recently completed the construction of a second in patient/outpatient treatment facility for compulsive gamblers, appropriately named the Center of Recovery (CORE). The association operates one facility in Shreveport and its newest facility in New Orleans. As these facilities are unique in the country, they treat compulsive gamblers from out-of-state as well.

In addition to posting brochures and posters announcing the availability to patrons of help for problem gambling, the riverboat casinos conduct comprehensive training for their employees about the symptoms of compulsive gaming. This training is done through a voluntary cooperative effort with the state of Louisiana and the LACG.

Beginning January 1, 2000, all calls from problem gamblers seeking help have gone through a toll free 24 hour gambling-specific hot-line to a call center in Shreveport operated by the LACG. This $250,000 per year operation is partially funded by state contracts based on state taxes paid by riverboats and contributions from the gaming industry. The number is 1-877-770-STOP (7867).
